i always felt like there should have been more characters lke captain america, like he felt more like what a “normal” person’s reaction to war would belol at first i had forgotten i’d referenced Captain America in that post so i was like “why the hell is roshan talking about Cap” but then I remembered
yeah it’s weird. Cuz like, clearly he didn’t belong, and CERTAINLY should not have been in charge. His fear was palpable but so unhelpful - so why was he there? How did he get through all his marine training and still be unable to cope with the pressure? It’s an interesting part of the show and I feel like they probably could have done more with it, but because we’re all so obsessed with the super cool under pressure, hardcore image of being in the military and being a marine, he’s mostly just explored as an incompetent. It sucks because on the one hand - people like him in the military have the potential to get more people killed and that doesn’t garner a lot of sympathy, but on the other the dude is scared of dying and how can you blame him for that?
I guess at this point I’m more interested in the stories that don’t have well rounded endings, that don’t finish off the way Band of Brothers did (everyone playing a game of baseball in a sunny field, all smiling and laughing and oh it’s so sad people died but look everyone else is ok). To its credit - GK had a more interesting ending, this sort of anti climactic, anxiety filled episode where people freak out and they don’t know why they’re freaking out (god, poor Ray, that scene gets me every fucking time because that right there is PTSD you guys, when you just lose it and you don’t know why)but yeah. This shit is so much messier than TV and movies can allow. I think the Pacific probably came close, but still what about the dudes who go home and hurt someone they love, or kill themselves, or end up on the street, or can’t find medical care? Those are aspects of war we aren’t paying attention to, that we aren’t making miniseries of with beautiful actors who make us want to smoosh their faces together.
i’m guilty of this myself, but there’s definitely some fetishization that goes on and while it isn’t something I’m going to feel super terrible over, it is worth paying attention to. The way this society thinks of, portrays, talks about, whatever, war is really interesting to me.
Yeah, I was just thinking about captain america (not cap lol) because I was reading an article that talked about how in vietnam, a lot of draftees wouldn’t be able to handle the pressure and would react just like him, and get people killed, or sometimes kill people themselves
And the military went to great lengths to cover it up, to make Americans believe that boot camp makes everyone into a stone-cold badass and that these reactions never happen
That’s why captain america was so interesting to me, because instead of encino man who was just incompetant because he was a dumbass, captain america was incompetant because he couldn’t pull it together, he knew that they were going to war with bad equipment and not enough support, and he was terrified of dying. and he did some terrible terrible things because of that. I wish they’d spent more time on him — like obviously he wasn’t a very likable character, but he felt like a truthful character, one that probably happens more often that the military would like you to think.
Also I haven’t watched Band of Brothers (for shame, I know, and I’ll probably grab the series from you soon) so I can’t comment on the ending, but I was impressed by how unsettling the ending to Gen Kill was — that no one wanted to watch what they had done, that they all just drifted away like it was a terrible dream, etc. And I haven’t seen the Pacific either, so…….well, now you know my thoughts on captain america.

temporarily breaking my tumblr hiatus to tell you about my experience on the bart today:
i was chillin on the richmond line, on my way home from dinner, and like the only seat left was behind this really nasty lookin white guy with even nastier lookin dreads….lmao they were so fucking ugly and they were right in front of me i couldn’t help but stare. literally they were the most pathetic attempt i had ever seen, and hella long and stringy. they were so bad i even considered taking a photo because it was so fucking unreal.
anyways he noticed me staring and turned around all defensive and shit and was like, “i don’t appreciate being treated like an animal in a zoo. i am not a specimen. stop objectifying my body. i see you staring. these dreads are part of my religion. i am rasta.”
and like all i could do was laugh tbh. i straight-up laughed at him to his face. it had to be a joke that a young white male was telling me to stop objectifying him and treat him like a human. like LMAO WHAT
but more importantly after I laughed he was about to say something else defensive and dumb and all the sudden this dude with actual dreads standing across the aisle yelled out, AYO CRACKA SHUT THE FUCK UP NOBODY CURRS BOUT YO RACIST WHITE BOY CULTURAL APPROPRIATION STRUGGLES AND YO NASTY ASS HAIR SIT IN YO DAMN SEAT AND ACCEPT YOU THE MOST VANILLA MUHFUCKA IN THE MUHFUCKIN BAY
omg it was the best and funniest thing that has ever happened to me on bart
